  6. Emma Hartl, 4, female, white, born in Minnesota, father of foreign birth.
  7. Clara Hartl, 2 female, white, born in Minnesota, father of foreign birth.

Things To Note:

  • John Hartl was 40 in 1885, making him born about 1845 in Germany.

  • Mary Hartl was 15 in 1885, making her born about 1870 in Pennsylvania.

  • Emma Hartl was 4 in 1885, making her born about 1881 in Minnesota
  • Clara Hartl was 2 in 1885, making her born about 1883 in Minnesota.

Questions I have:

  1. When did John Hartel immigrate and how?
  2. With there being only 15 years difference between Mary the wife and Mary the daughter, is this really the correct mother?
  3. Could there have been a first wife that was the mother of the first 3 children, then a second marriage to Mary Ann Kaufmann who had the last two children? Would also help explain the huge gap in children’s ages.

NEXT TO DO:  Locate Albert J. Starkey in the 1880 US Federal Census.

Albert Starkey and Mary Hartl were married in St. Paul, Ramsey, Minnesota. Witnesses to their marriage were Henry Starkey and Mary Starkey. They were married by a Clergyman. They obtained their marriage license on 7 Jan 1889.

Things to note:

  1. Obviously the marriage information can now be considered “sourced”
  2. Albert Starkey has a brother named Henry Starkey and a sister named Mary Starkey, is this the witnesses?
  3. Mary Hartel is spelled Mary Hartl in this record. I will add that as an additional spelling.

.

Although I have found the census records for them as a couple, they will both appear on census records before they were married, this is what I will work on next. Finding each one previous to them being married.

Next To Do: Look for Albert in the 1885 Minnesota State Census.

  • The census states they own their farm, with a mortgage. Look for records to support this.
  • Albert and Mary do not speak English in 1920, however, the 1930 census states that they do. Makes me wonder if they learned English during that timeframe… yes this is how random my mind works haha.
